Thomas Hampson gives the lecture: “Listening to Thought: A Guide to German Romanticism.” In the lecture, the third in a series of three from the 2009-2010 New York Philharmonic concert season, Hampson discusses the “Bildersprache,” or “picture language,” of German Romantic literature and music. He sings several selections from Robert Schumann’s “Dichterliebe,” Op. 48 (1840). He also addresses Gustav Mahler’s song “Wer had dies Liedlein erdacht?” from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn.”
