An Anthology of African and African Diaspora Songs Recording Project (2021)

Introduction

As part of Classic Song Research Initiative (a partnership between the Hampsong Foundation and the University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre, and Dance), a collection of recordings of songs by Black composers were created by singers from the University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre, and Dance in May-June 2021 with pianist and recording engineer Dr. Sara Chiesa.

These recordings include selections from An Anthology of African and African Diaspora Songs, a new publication by scholar-performers Dr. Louise Toppin (Editor) and Dr. Scott Piper (Associate Editor) and available via Classical Vocal Reprints.

Students were part of Dr. Louise Toppin’s African American Art Song Literature course at U-M during the Winter 2021 semester.
